Del Mar, CA History

Del Mar is arguably in the "north county" area of the county of San Diego. By that definition North County includes all of San Diego County north of La Jolla.

The Del Mar Fairgrounds puts Del Mar on the world map. Although it lays 107 miles south of Hollywood it carries the legacy of tinsel town; it was built in 1937 by Bing Crosby, sponsored by Paramount Studios, and was built on Jimmy Durante Blvd. Speaking of tinsel, drive through the Holiday of Lights at the year's end to get an idea of how the Fairgrounds keep Del Mar alive all year long.

Del Mar beaches, known sometimes as "Malibu South," are among the most beautiful in all of California, lie just north of Torrey Pines State Beach, and are the first beaches noted in the Beach Boys' song "Surfin' USA.". These attractions, its extensive history, happenin' Del Mar night life for singles and beautiful weather year round make real estate expensive in Del Mar. Del Mar is west of Interstate 5, which also contributes to the high prices. Location, location, location. Oh, and don't forget about the location.

The 2000 census marked Del Mar's population at only 4,389 and it feels that way. Despite its history and major attractions it maintains a small-town feel with an excellent school system. So if you're looking for the quintessential "It's a Wonderful Life" town but on the beach and without the snow, Del Mar is the place to look for your new Del Mar home.
