Moving to Rancho Santa Fe, CA

What can you say about Rancho Santa Fe? Without stating the obvious you might be interested to know that it is an unincorporated town and has extremely strict design restrictions. Most of the homes in Rancho Santa Fe are not in plain sight from the roads. With the exception of a few restaurants, a school, and some golf courses and country clubs, Rancho Santa Fe is predominantly residential.

Unless you've vacationed in the Hamptons and toyed with buying a vacation home there you're probably not looking for a home in Rancho Santa Fe. There are only 1,000 homes here and the median household income was over $200,000 in the 2000 census. This is a very exclusive neighborhood with few sidewalks, 45 miles of horseback riding trails, individualized post office boxes for each real estate owner, and an organization that disallows properties to be downsized below 1 acre. If you are a fan of the area yet you must settle for one of the condominiums built in the Village, make sure to sell your golf clubs and tennis racket on eBay because condo dwellers are not allowed in the Rancho Santa Fe Golf & Tennis Club. Oh, and if you already live in Rancho Santa Fe and you choose to move into a condo, you will be blackballed from the club as well.

If you remain undeterred and are dead set on moving to the Ranch, you might neighbor-up with Bill Gates, the owner of the San Diego Padres, John Moores, Madonna, when she's in the U.S., or Jewel (try not to get a lot too close... she yodels).
